The problem with music today is we have access to all music, literally everything that's ever been recorded, good and terrible. I truly believe if Sarah was born 50 years ago, her music would be looked at like Dylan, Lennon and all the greats. She should be a household name that everyone knows. One of the best lyricists I've ever heard. These aren't just a hooky beat with a one line forgettable chorus. She's an incredible vocalist who sings in her voice, not a put-on, singing in autotune! The first track to be released is a perfect example of why one should try to obtain the full Sarah Morris collection. Sarah paints an incredibly recognisable picture of how life feels at times - in clever lyrics, and set to a good tune, and all performed with skill and dedication.

“Between Here and There” is my introduction to Sarah Morris’s recording catalog. It presents her pretty voice as clear, true, expressive, and flexible. Favorite track? It’s early; but probably “Be With You” with Andrew Foreman, possibly “Hold Me Now” with Graham Bramblett. Compare any of these four recordings to Morris’s part in Reina del Cid’s video of the rock classic, “One Fine Day,” originally a hit for The Chiffons, to get an idea of Morris’s versatility as a singer (RdC’s, too).
Favorite track: Be With You (with Andrew Foreman).
Spring came early this year
Or came late, I can’t tell
Oh, I hardly know what day it is
anyway
You could hold a calendar in front of my face
I’d press my finger to some square
Declare with confidence
“It’s this one!
Maybe?”
There’s a weirdness
And a wildness
And a heaviness
To every moment
Lately
But I feel a little comfort
Knowing you probably feel these same things, too
So even if we’re far apart
I can still be with you
The weeks are flying by
The hours just limping along
My heart can’t settle on a song
To fit the mood I’m in
Which is a restlessness like I’ve never known
I’ve paced each inch of my kitchen floor though
My doors aren’t locked
And there’s an open road if I had
The inclination
There’s a bitterness, but a sweetness, too
And a darkness
And a light that finds me
Daily
But I feel a little comfort
Knowing you probably feel these same things, too
So even if we’re far apart
I can still be with you
I’m not sleeping well, so I’m rarely awake
But I end each night with a prayer for strength
And the wisdom to take
This time, this space
To root down
Trust someday I will bloom out
Again
But I feel a little comfort
Knowing you probably feel these same things, too
So even if we’re far apart
I can still
I can still
Feel a little comfort
Knowing you probably feel these same things, too
So even if we’re far apart
I can still
I can still
Be with you
Between here and there
Between now and then
There’s a wide plain
And a deep canyon
There are oceans vast
There are mountains high
There are forests thick with ancient pines
And it’s a lot to see through
It’s a lot to look past
It’s a lot to take in
It’s a lot to ask
And it’s almost, maybe too much to hold
I know
Between right and wrong
Between weak and strong
There are infinite ways
To shade in gray
There is ‘chin-up proud’ and
There are caving shoulders
There are stones you throw
And then there are boulders
And it’s a lot to carry
It’s a lot to move
The wisdom you gain
And the plenty you’ll lose
And it’s almost, maybe, too much to hold
I know
I know
Does it make it any better
Does it make it any worse
Finding brand new words
For these age-old hurts
Any certainty we muster
Is only for show and
The story’s the same wherever you go
Between won’t and will
Between storm and still
There is howling fear
And quiet brilliance
There is darkest night
And morning bright
From gold and blue
Intertwined
And it’s almost blinding
And it’s hard to hear
And the questions keep coming
And the answer’s right there
And it’s almost, maybe, too much to hold
I know
I know
Does it make it any better
Does it make it any worse
Finding brand new words
For these age-old hurts
Any certainty we muster
Is only for show and
The story’s the same wherever you go
And it’s a lot to see through
It’s a lot to look past
It’s a lot to take in
It’s a lot to ask
it’s almost, maybe too much to hold
And I know that you’re tired and want to let go
And the best I can offer is
You don’t have to do this
Alone
The only truth harder to swallow
Than the fact that none of this is within my control - ooooh
Is letting go of the notion
That I can do this all on my own -ooooh
I hate it, I hate it
I’ve spent all my life trying to be the exception to a rule
But it turns out
I need you
to be soft
I need you
to be strong
I need you to stay calm now
And I don’t know for how long
I need you to laugh when things get absurd
I need you to dig down deep and use only your kindest words
When I get lost I need you to find me
And when you do I need you to remind me
That you need me, too
Just like I need you
Oh, you need me, too
Just like I need you
The only advice harder to follow
Than it’s best to sit here and just wait this out -ooooh
Is I’m supposed to see a gift in the mess here
and keep my faith louder than my doubt -ooooh
I hate it, I hate it
And I’m tired of fighting the tears that come
As one more thread’s undone
So I’ll say it
I need you
to be soft
I need you
to be strong
I need you to stay calm now
And I don’t know for how long
I need you to laugh when things get absurd
I need you to dig down deep and use only your kindest words
When I get lost I need you to find me
And when you do I need you to remind me
That you need me, too
Just like I need you
Oh, you need me, too
Just like I need you
I Need
You
I Need
You
I Need You
I need you
to be soft
I need you
to be strong
I need you to stay calm now
And I don’t know for how long
I need you to laugh when things get absurd
I need you to dig down deep and use only your kindest words
When I get lost I need you to find me
And when you do I need you to remind me
That you need me, too
Just like I need you
Oh, you need me, too
Just like I need you
about
‘Spring came early this year, or came late, I can’t tell – oh, I hardly know what day it is anyway’. (from ‘Be With You’)
Somehow, in all of the chaos and constant change that was 2020, I managed to keep writing songs. I belong to a songwriting group with weekly prompts and deadlines, and that structure was a gift. Not every song was a response to the immediate landscape, but certainly some were, and the three originals on this project served me as expression, as an untangling, as a comfort. While the songs were written in March-August, the project began to take shape in September, at first out of necessity – I’d written a song on piano, but my piano skills are limited, so I turned to my bandmate, Lars-Erik Larson, to ask if he’d make me a solid piano demo I could sing with. He did that, and more (accordion, marimba), and the foundation for this project was formed. 4 songs, 4 collaborators. Each song tracked remotely, with the collaborator completely in charge of the instrumental arrangement. In addition to Lars, Andrew Foreman, Graham Bramblett, and Jillian Rae each created a track. I then went in to RiverRock Studios in NE Minneapolis to record vocals with long-time co-producer Eric Blomquist. A year after releasing the album, ‘All Mine’, and before whatever comes next, here is “Between Here and There”.
